Welcome to the Chomiak Charolais sale, along with guest consignor Ervin Zayak.
Our family entered the Charolais business officially in 1990, however, prior to that for approximately ten years, we ran Charolais bulls in our commercial herd. From 1990 on, our agenda has always been the pursuit of excellence. While our slogan is on course to excellence, over the years we enhanced our cow herd with purchases from long time Charolais breeders. This cross pollination activity in the past 10 years of top line purchases has created an impressive female herd of 140. As well to enhance our herd quality, our culling is hard.
Our program in the pursuit of excellence is beginning to show progress. In 2008 at Edmonton Farmfair we were honored with a champion mature cow with calf at side and a reserve champion heifer calf. Then our heifer named Simply Irresistible in 2009, began her path to success, starting with being Reserve Grand Champion Charolais Female at Armstrong BC; and then onward to the Farmfair in Edmonton taking the Female Grand Champion Charolais Female honors and finally taking the Agribition show in Regina where she was honored as the Junior Champion and concluded by being selected as the National Grand Champion Charolais Female.
Our herd sires are always selected keeping in mind the alliance which we are developing with the cattle folk to ensure that we are able to provide that functional bull along with calving ease. We scout out our sires to ensure that we are introducing strong traits to continually improve the herd. Our herd sires over the years were either direct champions or sons of champions. Currently we have purchased half and Full French sires to introduce that trait into our current purebred program. As well in our AI program, we select sires with strong traits. Last spring we purchased a bull from Eaton Charolais in Montana to service our heifers.
Our operation is a family affair. The farm is located south of Mundare where my grandparents settled in 1901, emigrating from Western Ukraine. The 100 year celebration took place in 2001 and was recognized with the Century Homestead plaque. We enjoy a mixed farming operation basically grain and Charolais, with the primary focus on our Charolais business. Our hospitality is always engaged and we welcome visitors.
